Many NYC and Long Island leases require the apartment returned 'broom clean' — and a growing number specifically require professional carpet cleaning with receipt at move-out. Read yours before your final week: if professional cleaning is required and you skip it, the landlord can hire it done and deduct retail price plus their time from your deposit.

What landlords can (and can't) deduct

Normal wear — traffic patterns, minor flattening — is the landlord's cost, not yours. Damage beyond normal wear — stains, pet accidents, burns, odors — is deductible.
