Adjust for your household

Kids under ten: every 6–12 months (floor time, spills, and traffic accelerate everything). Pets: every 6 months, with spot treatment between (dander, oils, and accidents build fast). Allergy or asthma sufferers: every 3–6 months — carpet acts as a filter that must be emptied, holding dust mites, pollen, and dander that vacuuming can't fully extract. Smokers or wood-burning fireplaces: every 6 months for residue and odor.

The NYC factor

City carpet works harder than suburban carpet. Urban grit — subway dust, soot, construction particulate — is abrasive and cuts fibers as you walk on it. High-rise apartments with windows facing avenues collect it constantly. For Manhattan and brownstone Brooklyn households, 6–12 months is the realistic interval, not the 18-month suburban schedule.

Signs you've waited too long

Traffic lanes visibly darker than the room's edges, a smell you notice returning after vacuuming, allergies that flare indoors, or a carpet that looks flat and gray rather than its actual color. At that point you need restoration cleaning, not maintenance — it costs more and recovers less. The economics always favor the schedule.

Maintenance between cleanings

Vacuum weekly (twice weekly with pets) with slow passes, treat spills the hour they happen, use walk-off mats at entries, and go shoes-off if your household allows it.
