Why this list exists

The carpet cleaning industry's dirty secret is the bait-and-switch: a $99 phone special that becomes $400 on arrival through mandatory 'pre-conditioning' and 'deep soil surcharges.' New York, dense with apartments and short on time, is the scam's favorite market. Ten questions filter out every operator who runs it.

Questions 1–5: the business itself

(1) Is your quote binding — is the phone price the final price? The only acceptable answer is yes, with any adjustment discussed before work starts. (2) Are you insured, and can you send a COI to my building today? In NYC this is a same-day yes or a goodbye — our COI guide explains why. (3) Where can I read your reviews? Named, local, checkable — like ours. (4) Is pricing published anywhere? Companies that hide prices plan to improvise them; here's our page. (5) Who actually shows up — your employees or a subcontractor who bought my job from a lead site?

Questions 6–10: the work

(6) What method do you use, and why for my situation? The right answer names hot water extraction for deep residential cleaning and explains when low-moisture makes sense — see our method comparison. (7) What's included in the base price? Pre-treatment, spot work, and deodorizing should be — 'extra' versions of those are the upsell machine. (8) How long will drying take? 4–6 hours is the professional answer. (9) Do you test fabrics and rug dyes before cleaning? Non-negotiable for wool, silk, and upholstery. (10) What happens if I'm not satisfied? Listen for a re-clean policy stated without hesitation.

Red flags that end the call

A price that sounds impossible ($25 per room is the bait, not the price). Pressure to book 'today only' pricing. No physical address. Cash only. Refusal to name their insurance carrier. Any answer to the binding-quote question that contains the word 'usually.'

The honest-market answer

Legitimate NYC cleaning runs $0.50–$2.00 per square foot with real minimums — the full economics are in our NYC cost guide. Anyone dramatically below that range makes it back on your invoice or your carpet. Ask us all ten questions at (347) 594-1365 — we enjoy this quiz.
