Candle Wax, Gum & Slime in Carpet: Damage-Free Removal

Three problems, one principle

Wax, gum, and slime are removal problems, not stains — solid or semi-solid masses gripping the fibers. The principle for all three: change the temperature until the mass lets go of the carpet, then remove it mechanically. Rubbing, hot water, and improvisation are how a coin-sized problem becomes a palm-sized one.

Candle wax: freeze, crack, iron

Harden the wax with a bag of ice cubes (bagged — water spreading through wax residue makes it worse), then shatter and pick out the brittle pieces. The remainder comes out with the paper-and-iron trick: brown paper bag or plain paper towel over the residue, warm iron (low, no steam) on the paper for a few seconds, and the wax melts upward into the paper. Fresh paper, repeat. Colored wax may leave dye behind — that part is a stain, treated like one, and red dye in pale carpet is a professional call.

Chewing gum: the ice method

Freeze the gum solid with bagged ice, five minutes, then pry it up with a spoon or dull knife — it releases in chunks when properly cold. Work patiently; softening means re-icing, not pulling harder. The thin residue that remains responds to a drop of dish soap solution and blotting. Commercial buildings: gum removal is standard scope in our maintenance programs, because sidewalk gum walks in daily.

Slime: the vinegar exception

Kids' slime — glue and borate — dissolves in acid. Pick off everything liftable, then work white vinegar into the remainder for a few minutes and watch it break down; scrape gently, blot, repeat, rinse with water at the end. Skip the ice on slime and skip the vinegar on gum: matching the method to the mass is the whole game.
