Upholstery Cleaning Codes Explained: W, S, WS & X

Under a seat cushion or on the platform beneath, nearly every upholstered piece carries a small tag with a single letter — the manufacturer's cleaning code. It's the first thing our technicians check on every upholstery job, and understanding it explains most of the sofa disasters we get called to fix.

W, S, WS and X — what each means

W means water-based cleaning is safe — most microfibers, many synthetics, the easiest category. S means solvent only: water can leave rings, shrink fabric, or bleed dyes — common on cotton prints, some linens, and rayon blends. WS permits either method, chosen by soil type. X means vacuum only — professional attention required for anything more, typical of some delicate weaves.

Why 'S' fabric is where DIY dies

The most common upholstery ruin we see is a water-based grocery-store spray used on an S-coded fabric: water rings that won't blot out, cellulose browning that surfaces as the piece dries, and dye bleed on prints. The damage often looks worse than the original stain — and unlike soil, it's chemistry, not dirt, so it doesn't simply clean out.

How professionals clean each code

W and WS fabrics get low-moisture hot water extraction — deep cleaning without soaking cushion cores, dry in 2–4 hours. S fabrics get dry-solvent cleaning that lifts soil without a drop of water. X and no-tag pieces get a hidden-spot fiber test that tells us what the manufacturer didn't. Fabric testing before cleaning isn't caution theater; it's the entire difference between a professional and a person with a machine.

When the tag is missing

Vintage pieces, custom upholstery, and imports often carry no tag at all. The professional answer is burn-testing a hidden fiber sample and moisture-testing an invisible spot — two minutes that prevent permanent regret.
