Wool, Silk & Oriental Rug Cleaning: An Owner's Guide

By the crews of Same Day Carpet Cleaning NY Β· Updated July 2026

Why fine rugs are different

A hand-knotted wool or silk rug isn't carpet β€” it's textile art with natural dyes, protein fibers, and foundations that react to chemistry, heat, and moisture in ways synthetics never do. The most expensive rug damage we see isn't wear; it's well-intentioned cleaning: color bleed from untested dyes, browning from over-wetting, fiber damage from alkaline detergents made for nylon.

The non-negotiables

Every fine rug job starts with fiber identification (wool, silk, cotton foundation, viscose β€” each demands different chemistry) and dye-stability testing on every color in an inconspicuous spot. If a cleaner doesn't test before wetting your rug, stop them. Aggressive one-method cleaning is the industry's quiet epidemic.

In-home vs. immersion washing

Sturdy wool rugs in good condition can be cleaned beautifully in place with controlled-moisture extraction. But heavily soiled pieces, silks, antiques, and anything with pet contamination gets dramatically better results from full immersion washing at a facility: dusting that removes pounds of dry grit, a controlled bath with fiber-matched solution, and flat drying that prevents shrinkage and ripples. Our rug service offers both β€” with free pickup and delivery for facility work.

What owners should do (and never do)

Do: vacuum gently without the beater bar, rotate the rug annually for even wear, use a quality pad, and blot spills instantly with water only. Never: use grocery-store carpet spray on wool or silk, steam-mop a rug, scrub fringes, or let a wet spill sit β€” moisture trapped under a rug breeds mildew and dry rot in the cotton foundation.

A New York note

From Upper East Side prewar collections to Five Towns heirlooms and Hamptons designer pieces, we clean some of the most serious rugs in the country β€” and the process is identical for a $200 rug and a $20,000 one: identify, test, match, protect.
